5 Simple Rules: Avoid the Cold and Flu

As the cold and flu season approaches we all want to know the best tips and tricks to avoid getting sick. The Mayo Clinic Vaccine Research Group shares a few simple steps we can all take to help prevent the spread of disease and to reduce the chance of contracting the flu.

Dr. Gregory Poland’s first rule of thumb is to “stay away from sick people, although not always possible,” this can reduce the likelihood that you would even come into contact with the bacteria or the virus. In, addition to this, if you yourself start to feel ill or experience symptoms, you should stay home in attempt to prevent spreading the virus yourself.

The second guideline Dr. Poland gives is to wash your hands frequently. Warm to hot water and antibacterial soap for at least 30 seconds will help kill any germs that may be lingering on your hands. If in public, hand sanitizer is always recommended as an alternative.

To avoid spreading germs when coughing or sneezing, it is important to remember to cough into the crook of your arm, your inner elbow, as this reduces the distance and speed traveled by the virus. Dr. Poland suggests that you also politely ask others to do the same when sneezing or coughing to protect you as well as others around.

Avoid touching your face. Specifically, the eyes nose and mouth as this can be one of the fastest and most direct entries of the virus into your body. A way to avoid this is to wear a mask or facial covering in public especially when in an area where people will be in close proximity.

And of course, if you haven’t already, go get your influenza vaccine. The Mayo Clinic describes the vaccine as “the best way to protect yourself” against the flu and is the first defense against contracting the virus and getting sick.  Although even with the vaccine it is not 100% promised that you won’t get sick so it is important to take precautions and follow the other 4 steps to stay healthy.

As always, if you do begin to feel sick and experience symptoms, it is important to go see a healthcare professional.

An Unlikely Day in Cuba

Written by Shannon Devine

As we stepped off the ship we could instantly feel the time travel. From the cobblestone streets to the old cars and beautiful architecture it was if we were transformed to the 1950’s. The smell of rum and cigars, and the crisp heat took over us as we walked out of the port into the town of Havana. I for one could not wait for the old car tour knowing it stopped at the most famous Daiquiri bar frequented by the one and only Ernest Hemingway. The feeling of excitement mixed with the fact that I was walking through history was incredible.

The first visit and the beginning of our tour started at the Hotel Inglaterra, the long, but barely, standing hotel’s architecture was a beautiful colonial style but was sinking into the ground and gave a subtle haunted feeling. This is where we checked in for the tour and met our guide. Walking in to the hotel there were sections blocked off because there was no floor, it had disappeared. The hotel still took guests but was more of a cultural dining and rooftop bar experience for tourists and locals alike.

We hopped in our 1950’s Cadillac Eldorado (https://thenewswheel.com/why-does-cuba-have-so-many-classic-cars/) and were ready to drive around Havana. Leaving the hotel, we were driven through the city streets with views of many bright and beautiful cars along with tall stunning buildings, all seemed to be on their last legs yet stronger than ever. We decided that our first stop on the tour would be liquor and cigar store. We had our priorities. This store was a small rustic room under a cigar factory. We each picked out a beer for the road; my family bought a few bottles of rum to take home and I chose out my cigars to enjoy the Cuban culture even once we were back on the ship. We spent about half an hour there learning the difference in cigars and their rolling techniques, and even as a non-smoker it was incredibly interesting and somewhat mandatory to buy a few cigars of my own. We opened our beers and hit the road to drive up the mountains to the old fort and now military base.

On our trek up the winding roads, the top was down the wind was fresh and the cops that stopped us were polite. Our guide explained to us that it is very common to get stopped by the police on the way up to the fort, as tours need their papers and licenses checked. It was nerve wrecking yet added to the experience. Once at the top of the mountain we could see down on the busy streets of Havana and the colors and views were stunning. I had never felt further from home yet so at peace at the same time. Looking down on the busy streets on the edge of the water was so peaceful and beautiful.

A Taste of History

We were not allowed any access to inside the fort but from the outside we were able to read about the history of Cuba, the missile crisis and even see many missiles on display with their firing range. It was educational to say the least. So instead of going into the fort we found this secret hidden garden restaurant with Cuban delicacies and home dishes. Some were delicious and some were very unusual but the plantain chips were delightful. As we finished up our food, our guide started to describe our two options for the last stop of the tour. One was the Daiquiri bar known as Hemingway’s favorite place on the island, the other was a market just outside of the dock where we could walk through hundreds of stalls where merchants sold there homemade crafts and items. We decided we would do both! How could we visit such a controversial country and not completely submerge ourselves in all they had to offer?

The “Floridita” was a tiny bar on the corner of the busiest roads in Havana offering many flavors of Daiquiris but the most common of them was the Hemingway. It was said that he would come to the bar to write as he drank this famous lemon based daiquiri for hours. It was a bitter and sweet taste of history and Cuban rum. We each had a few of these sided by some more salted plantain chips and I couldn’t ask for a better way to wrap up this Cuban experience.

We were dropped off at the market by the port rather than back at the hotel so that we could each pick out some type of memorabilia to remind ourselves of this incredible experience as well as help out the merchants by buying their incredible artwork. I chose a license plate  with a hand painted Cadillac Eldorado to add to my travel collection of license plates and shot glasses, while my parents each got a shirt and as a family gift to ourselves we bought a beautiful canvas painting of the Cuban shoreline with a lineup of 1950’s style cars painted into it.

A perfect end to an incredible day.

What is one of your favorite travel memories, is it a common travel destination?
